The HI 9813-6N is a highly versatile tool made by one of the most well-respected lab/scientific companies in the industry. The HI 9813-6N is a multiparameter meter that measures pH, electroconductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids (TDS), all of which is extremely important for anyone who is serious about hydroponics. This unit comes with a variety of accessories and features, such as a combination probe with DIN connector and 1 m/3.3 ft. cable, a starter set of calibration and cleaning solution sachets, a check solution sachet, a 9V battery and instructions. The unit uses a polypropylene probe with a fiber junction and gel electrolyte.
Calibration with this meter is very straightforward. It uses a calibration check function (Cal-Check) in conjunction with an LCD screen. Thus, if the meter is calibrated, it will display the message, “Probe is OK”; however, if the meter needs some servicing, it will display: “Clean Probe and Calibrate.”
The HI 9813-6N’s output range is between 0.0 to 60.0 degrees C, and pH 0.0 to 14.0 (+ or – 0.1 pH), with a resolution of 0.1 pH. In regards to electroconductivity, it ranges from 0.00 to 4.00 mS/cm (+ or – 2% F.S. mS/cm), with a resolution of 0.01 mS/cm. For TDS, the device has a range of 0 to 1999 ppm (mg/L) (+ or – 2% F.S. ppm), with a resolution of 1 ppm (mg/L).
The value of a high-quality pH meter cannot be overstated when it comes to hydroponics. Serious growers understand that slight wandering of pH can have detrminental effects on your grow, which can ultimately destroy or dramatically reduce the yield of your harvest. Moreover, pH in a growing solution can change very quickly, making routine checking a necessity to ensure that an optimal range is maintained. Likewise, the TDS and EC capability of the HI 9813-6N is critical to estimating the actual levels of nutrients in your solution, and is necessary to prevent under or over fertilizing.
Simply put, there is a point in time at which just about any novice hydroponic gardener realizes that pH strips simply don’t provide the range or accuracy needed for hydroponic applications. The Hanna Instruments HI 9813-6N is a critical piece of equipment that I highly recommend to anyone who is serious about growing plants hydroponically.
